Eduardo Tamayo: What Is Really Known About Tulsi Gabbard’s First Husband

Eduardo Tamayo is best known as the first husband of former U.S. congresswoman and former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. They were childhood friends, married in 2002 and divorced four years later after Gabbard’s lengthy military deployment. Yet anyone searching Tamayo today encounters a strange problem: the internet contains far more biographical detail about him than reputable sources can actually support.

That gap is the most revealing part of his story. Contemporary records confirm Tamayo’s marriage, one basic detail about his work and a small post-divorce public trail. Claims about his exact age, degree, wealth, current business and present-day family life are much less secure—and in at least one case appear to have been borrowed from an entirely different man named Eduardo Tamayo.

Who is Eduardo Tamayo?

The strongest description of Eduardo Tamayo comes not from a celebrity biography but from Tulsi Gabbard herself.

In a 2013 Vogue profile, Gabbard described Tamayo as her childhood sweetheart. The pair had surfed together, were best friends and came from families close enough that, in Gabbard’s account, his family felt like her own.

They married in 2002, the same year Gabbard entered elected politics in Hawaii. Contemporary records leave little ambiguity about the relationship: while serving in the Hawaii House of Representatives, she publicly used the name Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo.

A January 2004 legislative directory published by The Honolulu Advertiser listed her as the representative for Hawaii’s 42nd district and named her spouse as “Eduardo.” His occupation was given simply as “self-employed.”

That two-word description remains one of the most concrete contemporary pieces of evidence about Tamayo’s career.

Their marriage changed when Gabbard went to war

The central turning point in the marriage was Gabbard’s military service.

She joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in 2003 and deployed to Iraq the following year. In the later Vogue interview, Gabbard explicitly connected the breakdown of the marriage with the prolonged wartime separation, describing the strain experienced by partners who remain at home while a service member is deployed.

The couple divorced in 2006.

Importantly, the public explanation comes from Gabbard, not from Tamayo. There does not appear to be a comparably authoritative interview in which Tamayo publicly gives his side of the divorce. It is therefore more accurate to say that Gabbard attributed the breakdown substantially to deployment-related pressures than to claim that a single cause has been independently established.

Why Tulsi Gabbard kept the Tamayo name after the divorce

One unusual detail makes the relationship more complicated than a simple 2006 break.

For several years after the divorce, Gabbard continued using Tamayo as part of her public name. In April 2011, while serving on the Honolulu City Council, she formally announced that she would return to the name Tulsi Gabbard.

Her explanation was unusually personal. As reported contemporaneously by Honolulu Civil Beat, Gabbard said she had retained the married name because she had hoped that she and Tamayo might still have a future together. She said by 2011 she had accepted that reconciliation would not happen and described the two as friends at that time.

That statement provides useful historical evidence—but it should not be stretched into a claim about their relationship today. There is no reliable recent reporting establishing whether they remain in contact in 2026.

What did Eduardo Tamayo do for a living?

This is where many online biographies become much more confident than the evidence warrants.

The 2004 Honolulu Advertiser directory identifies Tamayo as self-employed. It does not identify a company, industry, job title, consulting practice or investment business.

Nevertheless, later websites routinely call him a businessman, entrepreneur, financial consultant or real-estate investor. Some claim that he earned a business degree or an MBA and belonged to the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.

There is a significant identification problem with the MBA story. Search results for “Eduardo Tamayo MBA” lead to a professional profile for an Eduardo Tamayo associated with the University of Dallas, Beta Gamma Sigma and technology work in Texas, including Visa. Nothing in that profile establishes that this person is Tulsi Gabbard’s former husband.

In other words, a detailed professional biography may have been attached to the wrong Eduardo Tamayo.

The responsible conclusion is narrower: Tamayo was documented as self-employed in 2004; his education, specific business activities and current career have not been reliably established.

Eduardo Tamayo’s age, birthday and net worth are not confirmed

Another frequently repeated claim gives Tamayo the birthday April 12, 1981.

There is no strong primary source located for that date. More importantly, April 12, 1981 is unquestionably Tulsi Gabbard’s own birthday, confirmed in her official 2025 Senate nominee questionnaire.

That does not make it impossible for two people to share a birthday. But without independent evidence, the duplication is a warning against treating the date as established fact.

The same applies to Tamayo’s alleged net worth. Online estimates range from hundreds of thousands to several million dollars, despite the absence of reliable reporting about his assets, company ownership, earnings or investments. There is therefore no defensible public estimate of Eduardo Tamayo’s net worth.

His parents, siblings, exact birthplace and present residence are similarly poorly documented. The New Yorker did report one family connection in 2017, identifying Tamayo as the nephew of Toby Tamayo, a figure discussed in its examination of the religious community surrounding Gabbard’s early life.

Beyond such limited references, detailed family trees circulating on biography sites should be treated cautiously.

One documented connection remained after the divorce

Tamayo almost completely disappears from mainstream coverage after 2006, but not immediately.

In February 2012, Honolulu Civil Beat examined donations to Gabbard’s congressional campaign and reported that her former husband Eduardo Tamayo had contributed $520.

It is a small detail, but a useful one. Combined with Gabbard’s 2011 statement that they were still friends, it shows that the divorce was not followed by a complete public rupture.

It does not prove anything about their relationship after 2012.

What is Eduardo Tamayo doing today?

There is no reliable current profile documenting Eduardo Tamayo’s job, home, relationship status or whether he later had children. Assertions that he currently operates a particular company or continues to live in Hawaii generally lack the level of sourcing needed to present them as facts.

There is also an important point of potential confusion for anyone arriving through current news about Gabbard: Tamayo is not Tulsi Gabbard’s current husband. Her 2025 Senate questionnaire names Abraham Williams as her spouse and lists no children.

Gabbard served as U.S. Director of National Intelligence from 2025 until her resignation took effect on June 30, 2026. Her resignation announcement concerned Williams, who had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer—not Eduardo Tamayo.

For Tamayo himself, the most accurate “where is he now?” answer is therefore less dramatic than many biography pages suggest: his present life is not reliably documented in major public sources.

That scarcity of information is not an invitation to fill the gaps. In Tamayo’s case, it is the essential fact readers need to know.
